OCTOBER 2020

Spent the month working on Drew's Halloween costume! She chose Glinda from The Wizard of Oz, and I got to work.

Tried to faithfully adapt and recreate Adrian's iconic look from the film, originally designed for Billie Burke.

MARCH 2021

THE DREW BARRYMORE SHOW was picked up for a second season!

JULY 2021

Matthew received a 2021 EMMY® Nomination for the design and execution of Drew's Glinda costume from the Halloween episode of THE DREW BARRYMORE SHOW!

My earliest memories of working with costumes are childhood Halloweens. My grandmother and mother taught me to sew as they made my costume every year. Each year I learned a bit more, eventually graduating from hand sewing to using my grandma's Singer sewing machine.

Throughout middle school and high school, as I began performing professionally and studying ballet, I spent hours in the costume shop helping out and eventually building costumes for Evansville Dance Theatre as part of a work study scholarship.

At Butler University I finally had the opportunity to study costume history, theatrical costume, and costuming for dance. I managed the Butler Ballet costume warehouse whose stock contained the collection of historical costumes from the Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo. Regularly handling and preserving costumes built by Karinska and worn by Maria Tallchief, Alexandra Danilova, and Frederick Franklin was the daily norm. I had the wonderful opportunity to work on brand new Party Mother gowns and  Waltz of the Flowers and Snow Queen tutus for The Nutcracker, men's tunics for Giselle, and ten classical tutus for the corps de ballet in Swan Lake.

After moving to New York City to pursue a career as an actor, I

Mobirise

began moonlighting in the costume and wardrobe world by volunteering at Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS. At BCEFA I met many wardrobe and costume design professionals who allowed me to assist on projects for Broadway Bares, Easter Bonnet, Gypsy of the Year, and Broadway Backwards. As a volunteer at BCEFA I coordinated costumes for Broadway Bares 2012, designed costumes for Fire Island Dance Festival 2012, designed and coordinated the opening number for Easter Bonnet 2016 celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Will Rogers Follies, and designed Broadway Backwards 2016.

In 2017 I finally joined IATSE TWU Local 764 and began preparing for second career. In 2018 I officially retired from the stage and began working backstage as a Broadway dresser thanks to some very generous Wardrobe Supervisors who took a chance on me. Broadway opened doors to television, and the rest is history.

In 2019 I built a brand new set of line costumes for A CHORUS LINE based on the Theoni V. Aldredge's original design. Currently, I am in the process of building a brand new set of Finale costumes for the show. The rental package is available to professional theaters. More info can be found at MJKCostumes.

In 2022, Matthew and the team at The Drew Barrymore Show won two Daytime Emmy's for their work on the 2021-2022 season. The entire Hair, Make-up, and Wardrobe team won together in the category of Outstanding Special Effects Costumes, Makeup, and Hair. Drew's stylist, Lee Harris, and Matthew brought home the Emmy for Outstanding Costume Design / Styling.
